July/August Holiday Notice
July 07, 2009
With Canada Day festivities now behind us and the Calgary Stampede in full swing, summer must be upon us (though you wouldn’t necessarily know it by the weather we’ve had).
This is to let our clients know that I’ll be on holidays from July 24-Aug 9 on the Left Coast, discovering if BC is as beautiful as the license plates claim. During this time, we will have regular email access in the evenings in case of emergencies.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us before July 24. If not, have a great month, and we’ll see you back here in August.
Using ExpressionEngine To Power an Interactive jQuery Map
March 06, 2009
The Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute wanted to geographically show where their members are located in Canada and India on their website with an interactive map that they could update and maintain themselves. We tossed around the idea of using Flash or the Google Maps API to accomplish this, but eventually settled on a jQuery-based map. Here’s how we linked the map to ExpressionEngine so that all the data displayed on the map could be controlled by Shastri and dynamically generated by the CMS.

IE6, Floats, and HTML Comments
February 19, 2009
Internet Exploder Explorer 6 is the bane of a web developer’s existence — everyone in our industry knows this. And after so many years of working with IE6, you sometimes feel like you’ve seen everything it can do in terms of screwing up your website. However, back in November I had a new WTF moment when IE6 started throwing a huge gap between two floated divs.

How Writers Can Get the Most Out of Their Blogs
January 30, 2009
On the Writers Guild of Alberta mailing list, there’s an interesting discussion going on about whether having a blog is worth it or if writers are just talking to themselves. Along with sharing their opinions on blogs and blogging, people offered some great advice on how to get their blogs out to a larger audience. Below is some of what they had to say.

Mac Gaming
December 03, 2008
You’d think being a Mac owner and a fan of PC video games might somehow conflict with each other — especially when said Mac is the sole platform in my house on which to play games. But, with Boot Camp, a Mac will run Windows just as well as any PC. However, Macs, and the iMac in particular, aren’t really made for gaming and don’t have top-of-the-line gaming hardware installed, so it’s often a bit of a crapshoot knowing which games they will run well. In an effort to better document how games play on the Mac, we’ve launched Mac Gaming, a site that shares the settings we’ve used to get the most out of the games we play. Will a certain game run on your Mac? Visit the site and find out.

Rambling Ron Wood
October 29, 2008
Frontenac House author Ron Wood has started up a new blog. Ron is the author of Frontenac’s top-selling And God Created Manyberries, described as:
Fictional political satire, written in the form of tongue-in-cheek banter in a small-town prairie saloon. The result is a refreshing antidote to political correctness, sloppy thinking and lazy journalism.
This is one worth subscribing to, if you’re interested in Canadian politics, journalism, and/or skunks.
